I don’t know about you but I am not a big fan of the AKC. Sure I love to watch the Eukanuba dog shows on Animal Planet, I love that channel; but I am a little wary of a group that decides who they want to admit for membership no matter how appropriate the requesting member might be. It somewhat feels like segregation, almost like saying “I am better than you”. Recently in the news, the AKC announced its New Top Ten Dog Breeds. I wonder if it wouldn’t be better to call the list “The 10 Most Popular Dog Breeds” because when you read the story that is what’s mentioned. It was nice to see that they included the bulldog for the first time in about 75 years because the bulldog have gotten a very bad rap. I believe that you can teach any dog to fight seeing that fighting is an inherent instinct of any dog as a way of survival, but no matter what others have done,it was just unnecessary to label the bulldog as a danger in the first place when the humans who insist that they fight are the dangerous ones. In my opinion, there are two types of dogs, they are:
(1)dogs that attack without provocation, attack because they are scared and want to prevent themselves from harm and to secure their territory.
(2)and dogs who are usually calm will attack if provocated with the intent on keeping themselves and their territory from harm.
My love of dogs started when I was a child. Two of the large breeds I love are German Shepherd and Rotweiller, but I also love small dogs such as the Maltese, Shih Tzu, Yorkies, Bichon and the list goes on and on. These are all top dogs in my book and whenever a list like this gets published, I still find myself wondering what qualifies as a top breed dog? I am never sure just how to answer that question but I am sure that if you ask dog owners across the board they will tell you without a shadow of a doubt that the breed of dog that they own is indeed a top breed. So I say, lists like that are subjective and only a few people get a “say so” in deciding what constitutes a top breed. Therefore, I for one pay no attention to those lists because I know that no matter what, my Maltese Yuki is a top dog and any dog in his breed is tops. There I said it and no I will not take it back! Deal with it, hmm.
